Riddles in the Hills
Frequently Asked Questions

Click below on a question to learn what our “Riddles in the Hills” is all about!  You will find that we are unique, fun and a great time for all!

What are they and who are they for?

-They are unique, customized, treasure hunts that use riddles, rhymes, directions and trivia to take participants from one clue location to another before solving a final puzzle.

-They are creative, original, and tailored for groups to laugh out loud and engage in adventures, in new or familiar places.

-They serve as something different and memorable, to bring people together, to build bonds and form confidence, to share a fun, common purpose. They can be used as icebreakers, or for friendly competition between familiars.

-They are interactive, and besides using GPS for directions, they are, for the most part “screen free.” Clues are solved by working together!

-They are scheduled, organized, and coordinated at least one or two weeks ahead of time, between Amy Erickson at Riddles in the Hills and a group point-person (ie. a company’s Human Resources contact, Visitors’ Bureau director, winery Event Coordinator, charter school director, etc.)

-They are intended to be done in vehicles, although they can be crafted as walking hunts over smaller areas.

-They are created, individually, for special occasions, events, specific age groups, and areas of interest.

Examples: A treasure hunt could be created for

-a group of staff members from a dental office in Galt.

-a tourist group of wine-tasters in Murphys.

-a church youth group in Sonora.

-a leadership conference activity in Tuolomne.

-a retirement party activity for a long-time employee in Ione.

-a Chamber mixer activity around some less-traveled Gold Country backroads.

-a homeschool group in downtown Lodi.

-a pre-wedding event to meet and bond before the ‘big day’ in Sutter Creek.

-a sober alternative to what may typically be a ‘drinking gathering’ for any group.

-a sponsored donation for a fundraiser in Coulterville.

…and the list goes on, ad infinitum. Be creative!

What are they NOT?

Riddles in the Hills’ hunts are not generic or self-guided tours that you follow through a website on your phone.

How do they work?

Amy will meet up with your group at a predetermined starting time and location.

Participants form teams, sign waivers, and usually have a snack while Amy breaks down the guidelines and answers any questions or concerns.

Teams are generally comprised of 3+ participants in a team, and between 2-10 teams.

Each team will need a combination of participants who can:

-drive a team of 3+ people responsibly, in a reliable vehicle.

-navigate/use GPS with reliable internet service for the area.

-hold a clipboard, read each clue out loud for the team, and keep track of the collected paper clues.

-carefully jump in and out of the vehicle to collect each paper clue from the jars.

Teams head out in all different directions with their first clue. Each clue is comprised of riddles that lead teams to the next clue jar, then the next, then the next…each with a specific place, street, address, and jar location.

If teams have questions or any issues while they are out on their hunt, they can call Amy for help. She’ll be waiting onsite at our established meeting place until the hunt is over.

When teams come back from the hunt, there is usually some social time. People are usually pretty pumped up and excited to talk to the other teams about their adventures, share laughter and “tales from the hunt.”

The hunts can end up at a pizza party, a sponsored barbecue, a small restaurant, a huge pancake breakfast, a local watering hole for cocktails and appetizers, a catered event, someone’s home, etc.

Hunts can be scheduled to be one to several hours long and can span across a town or several counties, morning or evening. This will all be determined by what the group point-person arranges with me beforehand.

What's the prize?

It’s open as far as possibilities go. You provide it so you can decide.

Winners can:

-split a pool of money that is collected before the hunt takes place.

-receive gift certificates from local establishments, movie tickets, or a vacation to Paris!

-pick from “white elephant-type items.”

-joyfully haggle over chocolate coins, toys, quarters for the arcade, etc.

This sounds awesome! How do we take the next step to arrange for a treasure hunt?!

Email, call or text Amy to set up a time that you can meet/communicate so that you can exchange information and establish clarity on the details for your potential hunt.

Amy will give you a quote proposal based on that information, and then you will go from there!

Amy will plan the hunt by creating clues, and establishing where they will be placed, in-person. It will sometimes be required that she speaks with residents or building owners if any clues may be placed at the edge of any private property, etc.

Amy will drive the “hunt route” to plant clue jars right before the hunt and pick them up immediately after it’s over.

Amy will be at the meeting location for the entirety of the hunt, from the beginning introductions, team-formation, explanations, waiver-signing, send-offs, and to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible throughout the whole event.

Amy can provide you with an email link for your participants, to give them details on specifics, and what to expect. If you are arranging the hunt, but you are having the participants pay Riddles in the Hills directly, I can provide an Eventbrite link for them to do that. You will be responsible for any amount that may be outstanding from the initial hunt agreement.

What do you need to provide?

A point-person will need to provide all the necessary information Amy will gather when we are figuring out logistics for a hunt. She will send or go through the questions together to make sure you’re on the same page and so that she can give you a quote proposal (i.e group size, occasion, interest, age group, location, dates and timeframe.)

Is there any necessary paperwork to do?

A signed agreement must be completed before a hunt is created, as well as a paid deposit of 50% for the entire event at the time of signing and the remaining 50% due on the day of the hunt.

Participants (or a parent/guardian if under 18) will need to sign a release waiver BEFORE the hunt.

How much would it cost to hold a treasure hunt?

The cost for a hunt can range quite a bit depending on group size, age range, area, timeframe and complexity. Let’s talk.

Participants (or a parent/guardian if under 18) will need to sign a release waiver BEFORE the hunt.

Testimonials

Amy’s Treasure Hunts are THE BEST! I attended the first handful of ones she created years ago, and I loved every minute of it. From the cooperative teamwork aspect to the nerdy local history trivia to the potentially fast-paced yet low-pressure competitive factor, these events have it all.

-Sabel, Santa Rosa, CA

I highly recommend the treasure hunt for children and adults! We did one for kiddos aged 8-10 and it was a blast for all. The kids had fun searching for clues and each one was age appropriate keeping them on their toes. Definitely a memorable experience roaming the town, learning new things and I look forward to more!

-Kari, Angels Camp, CA

Amy is thoughtful, imaginative, brilliant, detailed and whimsical, and all of these qualities manifest in her treasure hunt endeavors. I highly recommend these events to anyone who wants to bring some fun into their life!

-Rose, Santa Rosa, CA

I’m sooo thrilled and giddy you’re doing this out this way!! Can’t wait to win that prize again! Let the games begin!

Amy’s Treasure Hunts are a one-of-a-kind experience that I suggest everyone take part in. The first time I attended a hunt was in Sonoma County, and loved the experience of traveling to find clues and discovering the area I lived in through a whole new lens. This experience brought new connections with others and many memories that I will cherish for a lifetime!

-Paige, Santa Rosa, CA

Amy’s treasure hunts are the bomb! This is a great way to meet people and make friends. The clever clues she comes up with will challenge the best puzzlers.

-Michael, Santa Rosa, CA

We absolutely love Amy’s riddle and rhyming treasure hunts. We had the best experience connecting with our community each month, with new themes and added twists. We enjoyed the night hunts, especially, keeping our eyes out for magic lights……

-Kelly, Santa Rosa, CA

I attended 2 of Amy’s treasure hunts in Sonoma County. They were carefully planned and executed with gusto. There was plenty of laughter and I had fun meeting new people of all ages and backgrounds. I even met a guy I dated for over 2 years. Amy is creative and pays attention to details. I’d highly recommend this adventure.

-Stacy, Santa Rosa, CA

I spent a Saturday afternoon on a treasure hunt and had a great time! I wasn’t sure what to expect and found it to be a fun way to enjoy a beautiful day, see a new area and meet new people. Got to use my brain and laugh. Will do it again!

-Arron, Angels Camp, CA

I’ve been on two of Amy’s treasure hunt adventures. About 24 participants split up into 6 groups of 4, each grouped as a team in a car. Once the clues were given to us, we needed to solve them together to advance to the location where the next clue was waiting for us to find it.  The clues ranged from cultural to things to things you should have learned in 4th grade. And if you didn’t, chances are one of your teammates will have the answer. It was fun to do with a good friend, and we signed up for a second time. I recommend Riddles in the Hills.

I found Riddles in the Hills to be very fun and entertaining and a great way to spend a weekend afternoon. The pop culture trivia mixed in with the puzzles is a great way to get to know your team members, while the location of the clues allows you to get to know the area with a treasure hunt feel. I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone visiting for the day, or if you’re just bored and want to get out and meet new people.
